Why Summer Blows Your Budget

Amber

Have you ever noticed how summer has a way of getting us to spend money we never plan to spend? One minute, you're enjoying the sunshine, and the next, you're booking a weekend getaway, buying concert tickets, grabbing patio drinks, signing the kids up for activities, and wondering where did the extra thousand dollars disappear to? And here's the problem: most people don't realize the damage until September rolls around. And the credit card statement starts showing up.

The Mindset: Fun Without Overspending

Amber

Today I'm going to share seven simple ways to have fun for less this summer. Because enjoying your life and reaching your financial goals should never feel like an either-or decision. Thank you for listening to the Dead Free Dad podcast, where we help normal, everyday people like you take control of your finances and live a happier, less stressful life. I'm Amber, your host for today's episode. My husband and I saved and paid off over $54,000 in just 20 months and have been living debt-free outside of our mortgage since 2018. Now, after listening to this episode, if you're ready to take things to the next level, you're sick of living paycheck to paycheck, you want to reduce financial stress in your own life, you want to build savings that are there for all of life's emergencies, and you finally want to pay off your debt for good. Maybe you're like most people, including me at one time, and you're not sure where to start. Well, we've created an incredible free resource for you. And I'll be sharing all of the details later on in today's episode. Summer is one of my favorite times of year. The weather is finally nice. I live in northern Ontario. We don't get much of it. People are outside, kids are out of school, there's always something happening. But summer can be one of the easiest times to blow your budget. I know because I've done it. And you tell yourself it's just a camping trip. Then a couple of road trips. Before long, summer is over, and you're wondering why your bank account looks like it spent the season on vacation, too. The good news is that you don't need to spend a fortune to have a memorable, great, amazing summer. So let's dive in.

Seven Frugal Summer Ideas That Work

Amber

Number one, become a tourist in your own town. Most of us know more about destinations hundreds of miles away than we do about our own backyards. Look for local beaches, parks, hiking trails, community events, farmers markets, outdoor concerts, and festivals that are free or not super expensive. Challenge yourself to explore one new place close to home each and every week. You'll create memories and save a ton of money on travel costs. Number two, another fun way to really get those memories going this summer without costing a fortune is pack a picnic instead of going out. Now, restaurants are great, but they add up really quick. So instead of spending $75 to $100 on a meal, pack some food from home and head to the park, the beach, or maybe a lookout near you. The experience often feels even more memorable because you're doing something different. The goal isn't to stop having fun, it's to stop overspending on things that don't actually add much value. Number three, create a summer adventure jar. Now, this one is probably one of my favorites and great if you have kids too. Write down a bunch of free or low cost activities and throw them into a jar. Whenever somebody says, I'm marred, pull it out. And you're gonna pull out um one of the tabs, one of the little pieces of paper, and you're going to do that activity. You know, watch a sunset, have a backyard campfire, visit a new trail, take a bike ride, play a board game together. You'll never run out of ideas and you'll avoid spending money simply because nobody planned anything. Number four, use your local library. Now, this is something that um I have been doing more and more recently. Most people are seriously underestimating what their local library offers. Books are just the beginning. Many libraries have movies, audiobooks, workshops, even events, classes, and family activities. You're already paying for it through your taxes. You might as well take advantage of it. Number five, host a potlock. Instead of spending a fortune meeting friends in a restaurant, invite everyone over and ask them to bring something. The cost gets spread out, and honestly, the conversations are usually better. People rarely remember the restaurant, they remember the people they spent time with. Number six, schedule a no-spend weekend. One of the biggest reasons that people overspend is boredom. When you don't have a plan, spending money becomes the plan. Pick a weekend and challenge yourself to spend absolutely nothing on entertainment. You'll be amazed at how creative you become when spending

Spend Intentionally Without Killing Fun

Amber

isn't your first option. Number seven, remember what you're working towards. This one is probably the most important. Every dollar you spend today is a dollar that can't go towards your future goals. Now that doesn't mean never spend money. I'm all about the fun. It means spend intentionally. Ask yourself, is this really worth it? Does this align with what I want? Will I still be happy I spent this money a month from now? Sometimes the answer will be yes. And sometimes it won't. But making intentional decisions beats emotional spending every single time. Now, the biggest lie that we've been sold is that fun has to be expensive. It really doesn't. Some of the best memories you'll make this summer won't come from a credit card swipe. They'll come from simple moments with the people you care about: a campfire, a picnic, a walk, a conversation, a sunset. Those things don't require debt. They don't require financing. And they definitely don't require a credit card hangover in September. The goal is to get more life out of the money that you spend. So before we wrap up, I just want to say getting out of debt is not about proving how miserable you can be. It's about building a life that you actually want to show up for without money stress constantly hanging over you. And honestly, that's exactly what today's episode was about. Having a fun summer doesn't require blowing your budget. It doesn't require financing memories on a credit card. It just requires being a little more intentional with the choices you make and remembering that some of the best experience in life costs very little. You don't need perfection. You do not need to cut out everything you love. You just need a simple plan that makes sense for real life, your real life.
